What is taught in a concealed carry weapons course?

People who are thinking about getting a concealed carry permit often have questions.

Are all concealed carry courses exactly the same , well in every state that has them?

Do they allow me to handle firearms so I can see which is best for me?

Does it really matter where I take my concealed carry class?

Are ccw classes in some states better than others?

The problem seems to be that there is no definitive answer to most of these questions but as with most things not everyone who teaches CCW courses will be the same.

While two teachers in the same state may both be able to qualify you which one is the best teacher? Like the teachers at school some will be better than others.

You should take some time to speak to them and find out their level of experience and also see if you mesh with them. If you want to have some hands on time with a variety of pistols then you will need to make sure that the class is held at a firing range rather than in a local restaurant where many ccw classes seem to be held.

It all depends on the state but you can be sure to be given the information on laws regarding where you can/can’t carry and what the practice will entail. Again, a majority of the information will be by state.

I’m not sure 100%, I’m going to take the course too, so I’ve been looking for information about it. I’ve been told they teach you the laws and statutes, legal limitations, where you can and cannot carry and how you have to conceal the weapon and also they teach you to shoot to show you are competent with a firearm. They also help you fill out your application to submit to the state. It might be different in the different areas though. :)

When I took it 2 years ago in Missouri this is what I got out of it.
1) Gun Safety – yes boring old gun safety
2) When you can use a gun for self-defense – There is lots of grey area’s about self defense. IMO
3) Just because you are carrying a gun you are not the police
4) Generic gun info – naming parts, kinds of guns, other generic stuff.
5) Laws regarding CCW’s permits in each state and taking your gun across state lines.
The 8 hours of training could be shortened to about 4 hours. They did cover lots of laws regarding guns. At the end of the class I had a much different understanding of what I thought was correct info regarding self defense and gun laws.
